Director of the White House
National Drug Control Policy Visits Free Indeed Intensive
Outpatient Clinic
On
Thursday, September 29,2005, SFI hosted a visit from Office
of National Drug Control Policy, Director John P. Walters.
Director Walters had previously planned to visit Free Indeed
Intensive Outpatient Clinic to see firsthand the outstanding
work being done. His visit had been postponed in the
aftermath of both Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Director
met with Clinic founders Darren and Tonja Myles and their
staff along with State Assistant Secretary Michael Duffy of
the Office for Addictive Disorders and his staff members.
Director Walters was interested in hearing first hand how
the tragedy of hurricane Katrina has impacted the
Access to Recovery Program and what the needs of
Louisiana would be to in order to continue to treat its
citizens suffering from substance abuse issues.
John
P. Walters was sworn in as the Director of the White House
Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) on December
7, 2001. As the nation's "Drug Czar," Mr. Walters
coordinates all aspects of federal drug programs and
spending. In a February, 2002 White House ceremony,
President Bush and Mr. Walters released the National Drug
Control Strategy, which set aggressive goals of a 10 percent
reduction in teen and adult drug use in two years and a 25
percent reduction in teen and adult drug use in five years.
The latest Monitoring the Future Study, released in
December, 2003, showed an 11 percent reduction in teen drug
use over two years, exceeding the President's goal and
bringing drug use to its lowest recorded levels since the
early 1990s.
